The Ceramic and Majolica in the Umbria Region

Earth, Fire and Art: the sense of touch.

A leap into the world of handcraft of Umbria.

Let us introduce you to the old secrets of the local Arts where you will be the main protagonist….. and get the chance to discover the Artist that’s in you.

During this week we will take you to the magic world of colours and creativity using your sense of touch!!

You will attend ceramic lessons in one of the most famous ceramic schools of Deruta - Umbria.

The art of ceramic is one of man’s most ancient activities in fact it can be traced back to the Roman ages. Uncountable works have been created in Italy using just a handful of clay and a little fire.

Deruta, with no doubt is one of the most noble and ancient centres of ceramic production, whose name is celebrated not only by scholars and enthusiasts but is also known worldwide.

In 8 days you will have 20 hours of ceramics lessons where you will learn the basics of this ancient art.

You will also visit the pearls of Umbria: Gubbio, Perugia, Todi, Assisi, Montefalco.

In Gubbio you will admire Palazzo Ducale, Palazzo Pretorio, Palazzo dei Consoli, all vivid examples of the richness of its past. Perugia of course, with it's majestic open squares, the Gothic Cathedral, Fontana Maggiore, Palazzo dei Priori, the Basilica of San Pietro and the perfection of the "Perugino" s frescos in the Sala delle Udienze at the Collegio del Cambio are not to be missed. Not to mention the sweet addictive perfection of it’s Perugina Chocolates.

Along Todi’s streets it is possible to find old laboratories of shoes, ceramics, gold and wood; craft shops where they still hand on their tradition and techniques from generation to generation.

But we cannot forget all the historical wealth that comes from different eras: from the Etruscan to the Roman, from the Gothic trough the Renaissance until the Baroque that is dominated by the San Fortunato’s Temple.

Little introduction is needed for the mystic city of Assisi that is one of the most revered religious destinations in Italy. Certainly one cannot miss the imposing Basilica of San Francesco; visitors of all religious backgrounds can indeed appreciate and revel in its atmosphere of peace, quite and overall sense of spirituality. A guided tour of the Basilica and Assisi's most important landmarks will be followed by some free time to explore the quaint town centre on your own.

During this week there will also be an opportunity to learn the secrets of some of the wonderful local recipes by taking part in a hands-on cooking demonstration at the end of which you will sample the fruits of your labour, enhanced of course by the wonderful Umbrian wine.

This is also the home of a highly regarded wine producer: Montefalco, where you will tour the cellar, taste their wonderful Sagrantino and indulge in a scrumptious dinner.
